  1. Some viewers asked about our coffee mugs in this video. We received them from a local Christian radio station when we went there to record a podcast episode entitled, "We Had More Money Going Out Than Coming In". It's the story of how we met, our rocky start, and how we overcame financial problems. Here's a link to the podcast if you'd like to listen to it. https://open.spotify.com/episode/4xuJaPu3GcQ9q3NjvBG1yE?si=SWcMMS8YST6Sr6Lh9dvrxw

  2. I have found free or almost free things to do when going on a vacation or staycation by googling "best kept secrets"…then add town name we are visiting, we have found some really cool things to do that aren't main stream in alot of places we have visited. I hate to give away this secret, but…I love this community..😂

  4. Amy Jones says:

Sometimes you get discounted tickets or admission when you bring canned goods. Anyone else have these?

  5. Kelsie Reid says:

I need to figure out how to adjust from office to home with temperature. I would love to set my thermostat to 79°! But I work in an office that is 70° and I come home to 72-74 and it feels SO hot. I know it's not, but it just seems that way. I also think the office might be colder than 70° because it's definitely a colder 70° than my apartment at 70°😂

  6. Perhaps when fall comes you could do a video showing us how the cost difference worked out for your use of just central air last summer, and central air set to three degrees higher and fans this summer. I'd be keen to see that.

  7. Kristin B says:

    Love the tips, thank you!

  8. J K says:

Rain barrels are illegal in Colorado because they consider rain to be in the air rights that they own and that the property ow.

Check out long term health care with a home care health care rider. Surprisingly , decision makers will deny coverage for a nursing home to save their money..if you don't have a home healthcare rider you could deplete your savings quickly..

You are right about hotel rates dropping during the week. We took a 3 day trip to nearby Utah. We considered going on the weekend but the hotel rate was $120 per night. The rate dropped to $74 per night on Monday and included a delicious breakfast. We bought tickets for a play on Monday night. We bought cheap seats and used a senior discount. The usher told us we could move to better seats as the performance was not sold out. We used our National Park pass to visit 2 parks and enjoyed hiking.

  12. Now that Larry is retired and at home, what does he do all day different?

  13. G MW says:

I don't like stay vacations…. it doesn't feel like I had time off since I tend to work around the house and to me that's NOT a vacation… plus I like having me time (time by myself) and since I share my house with a roommate that never happens when doing a stay vacation

  14. Sue Barnard says:

    Humidifier water, to water plants

  15. Our little town did a scavenger hunt, it was totally free and so much fun ❤

  16. 4-H Fair is awesome way for the Family ❤ different County's have different fairs.
State Parks, our Bank gives out free tickets too.

  17. On Tuesday the AMC theatre offers discounted prices for tickets bought before 4pm. We joined their free Stub program and we paid $8.90 for both of us to see a movie. They signed us up at the counter! Tuesday will be the day we go to the movies! Have a big bag of green beans going in the canner tomorrow! We try not to turn on a/c before noon and off 6-8pm. (This week has been horrible ! ) Looking at flooring prices 😮 for replacement in 2 big rooms, going to be looking at the subfoors for awhile while we set aside extra money! Oh my, a huge eye opener on current prices. Closer to holidays they run sales so we are going to wait. Stay cool!

Hope/Larry, I too am from central Illinois. (ILL-INI). Can you share where you vacationed in the mountains? I assume that was driving distance. I would love to know more about the area that you visited! I am sure you traveled in a way that kept costs reasonable!

  19. deb moore says:

American Horticultural Society membership is only $35 a year and gets you in free to many gardens in the U.S. I’ve already used it twice to save $10 dollars locally.

  20. valerie d says:

You two were beautiful then and still now!!! Thanks for the tips!

  21. Brad C says:

I took a ride on a historical train excursion for half price through Groupon.

  22. We set our thermostat on 80 during the summer and run fans. Our electric bill in the summer and especially during the Texas heat wave has not gone up. I love doing Staycation activities because you get to know your home area a lot better. When I share what I have done around our area, I am surprised how many of my friends did not know that we had so many "free" things to do.

  23. So hard to do these free outdoor things when your summers are up to 115 degrees and the city is 1.5 hrs.

  24. Ty Faith and Larry for your great tips. Great video 😊

  25. The back of our home faces west, so my husband put up 2 sun sails(shades), that go from the house, just under the soffit and then he put in some stakes (we use the curly earth anchors because of being in sand)to anchor them out tightly. We don't get the direct afternoon sun, so it keeps our home cooler, and reduces our time of running AC. We also installed an attic fan to remove the heat out of the attic over our family room, where we spend the majority of our time. We also utilize fans throughout the house. We have installed a few higher powered fans(wall mount/ceiling mounted)to move air between rooms. Also my new countertop convection oven is great, uses less power, and no preheating needed, and I find it bakes faster than a conventional oven. My breaker for my electric stove is off.I made sure that the oven I bought would fit a 13×9 pan, so I can make anything, even a small turkey.

  26. Charlie says:

I’m so grateful that we’ve got a Waterbutt in our garden and I dry our laundry inside (I live in wet England) and use dehumidifiers which I use the water outside for cleaning and watering. The kids do chalk drawings on the path outside, someone made a spillage or maybe it’s just looking grubby out there? No problem! Empty the dehumidifier over it and it’s gone

  27. Stephanie says:

Most zoos and aquariums, and I've heard museums, will also give reduced price memberships for people with WIC, SNAP, or Medicaid. Also, most of these places will let children under 2 or 3 in for free.
Some places in touristy areas will also give reduced prices for locals. For instance I know Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg, TN will give Tennessee and Kentucky residents reduced price tickets. You just have to ask and show a state issued ID. Also, if you have a membership to the Knoxville zoo you can get reduced price tickets to the Aquarium in Gatlinburg.

  28. Sylvia Jones says:

    Loved that intro!

  29. I take my kids to the forest to pick cloudberries, blueberries, lingonberries and mushrooms in the end of the summer. In Finland we have loads of free food in the woods, I fill my freezers with free food, several huhndreds of litres of berries. We also go to the beach everyday in the summer to swim, we pack a picnic and really enjoy that. We go to playgrounds, libraries those are fun and free activities for the kids. And have sleepovers with friends. We also grow some food ourselves. And the kids play with waterguns in the yard.

  30. Paul R says:

Roller shutters at the ouside of the windows helps a lot for the hot sun, and a cold winter.

  31. P Heart says:

As long as you dont use bath oil or salts you can use bath water to water plants. The shampoo and soap breaks down and acts as a mild fertiliser.
Also water you boiled veg and eggs in.

  32. I just would like to say that I just recently "found" your channel and you guys are wonderful!! Larry seems like a very dear best friend to me and I have never personally met you guys! Hope, you're wonderful as well. Please don't get me wrong!

  33. Barb Name says:

A fun staycation and free activity in every state is touring State capitals. All you need to look for the times.

  34. Because of your review of electricity usage of kitchen appliances, I purchased a small air fry toaster oven yesterday. It will cut my electric bill and keep the house cooler here in Texas. My summer is spent with my farm animals and canning or pickling just about anything. Love your advice.

  35. Donna M says:

Missed the live and I have an excellent reason- our son is home! Thanks for the video- I have the kilowatt meter on my list- getting best price first ✌🏼

  36. Anna Zudis says:

Thank you. I listened to your interview on spotify. Loved it.

  37. I stopped using a dishpan of water to wash dishes. I get the dishcloth wet and put soap on ii. Then I use It to wash dishes till I don't see any more soap. I add more soap, and keep at it. I rinse each item independently with a smallish stream of water. There's no water running while I wash and very little being used to rinse. When I wash my hands, I use only a tiny bit of water… because wet is wet whether it's from a lot of water or a tiny bit of water. I don't flush until it's really necessary. And, I definitely turn the water off after I get wet in the shower. I wash my hair and self, and then turn on the water to rinse. It uses a fraction of the water a regular shower does. I've halved my water use. I've always been frugal, but I took it farther than usual. My average used to be about 30 gallons a day. Now it's about 15.
I do the same with gas and electricity.
I don't turn on the AC until it's about 84° inside. The thermostat is set on 78, plus I have ceiling fans in almost every room. By the time I go to bed, the house is cool enough, so I turn the AC off. So far this year, I've only had the AC on 4 days. I'm sure there'll be more, though.
I explained some time ago how I shaved 76%, and then another 11% off my electricity bill by unplugging everything but the refrigerator. I live under the poverty level on Social Security Disability. I have to take these measures, but I love trimming bills so much and saving money that I did those things even when I had a whole lot more income. When I get a bill, I've always taken it as a challenge to see if I can get it lowered the next month. I LOVE doing that!!! 😁

  38. Patrick L says:

I bet you guys could use a window A/C unit with one of your solar generators to boost cooling and savings

  39. Patrick L says:

Sometimes I use my solar generator as a kill-a-watt meter

  40. Lapis Lazuli says:

I also close the doors into unused rooms while the sun is shining on that side of the house. I reopen them once the temperature drops, and use box fans in the window for rapid cooling. We only have window units, not central AC, so we turned the smallest bedroom into our "sitting room" and keep that room cool during the day.

  41. Pat Black says:

In my area we have many free movies, popcorn included for the kids. Free concerts for adults. Many different types of music. Check local library for discounted tickets to local sites. Free swim days are also fun

  42. That's what we do during the day is set the a/c at 79° degrees and use fans then at night we set it for 76° degrees and it's been a huge savings

  43. Kerry James says:

    Take my lunch to park

  44. Can you do another video on solar indoor lights, that just need to be charged, sitting by the window?
I don have a solar panel, but would like to figure out a way to not use a lot of electricity ( lights) in the evening, if possible. Thank you
