Chipping – How to Build Confidence in the Short Game

If you’re lacking confidence with your chipping, especially those short finesse chip shots around the green, then this video is for you. Typically, golfers who struggle with their chipping, play without rhythm and tempo. Deceleration and over acceleration are common faults. This causes inconsistent contact and poor distance control.

Fortunately, these issues can be rectified. Aussie Golf Pros take you through the necessary processes to help you develop smooth tempo, reduce tension and improve commitment. Commitment is the key here and is often lacking with poor golf shots of any kind.

Golf Coaches, Not Teachers

The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches in every sense of the word. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.

Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are literally 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!

Skill Development vs Technical Changes

Although technique is an important factor in improving a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice towards improved performance.

External Focus of Attention

Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.

Enter the world of External Focus of Attention. This means that instead of focusing on body parts, a golfer can and should focus more on the target, the ball, the clubhead – objects which are external to the body. The sciences involving Motor Skill Learning have proven that by employing an External Focus of Attention, sports men and women learn new moves more quickly, retain changes more readily and can perform better under pressure.

All of the Aussie Golf Pros coaching, drills and advice for clients and viewers, involve an External Focus of Attention and the results can be astonishing!

  1. Over the years, I have watched a lot of You Tube golf lesson videos. Glen, you are the first one that has said "the only role the hands have is to hold the club." This is something I have said for almost forty years. The problem I have at times is when I get "too handsy," and this leads to missed shots. Keep up the good work!!!!

  2. Hi Glen,

    Thank you for the videos.
I agree with you 100% that we fear hitting the ball too hard and end up hitting way too short of the hole as a result. In the last month I've adopted a "to hell with it" mentality when chipping/pitching and have surprised myself with what happens when I'm a little more fearless, confident and – as you put it – committed to the shot. Now, my chipping and pitching have improved massively because I took a chance and hit it more firmly and with more conviction. My confidence soars now and I'm no longer hampered by anxiety when facing these shots.

Keep up the great work. I love your clear, to-the-point delivery and I'm so glad I found you! You've really helped to lift my game more than any other YT channel. 😊

Commitment has to be the key. I do like the no nonsense coaching. Straight to the point and clear. Thank you for that. I dread some of the videos where the coaching is less than 10% of the watch time. The rest is waffle and look how good I am coaching. Thank you.

  4. Thanks for putting this up Glen. I fall into the 'late acceleration + scull instead of a smooth committed stroke' category. What's your view on hip turn? Yours looks quite small. There seems to be two schools of thought on this, with many pro teachers saying you should rotate the lower body or 'do a mini turn'. I was out yesterday and forced myself to do a hip turn and it seemed to help me to generate a smoother swing.

Ha. Then it must have been your second take 😀. I think the biggest hurdle for me in getting better is to learn to swing around, as my instinct is to hit down on the ball. Any tips to help? Always look forward to your lessons. Cheers Glen

thanks Glen – -will try this

  7. Thanks Glen love your videos. Im playing of 13 and find I internally beat myself up when I make a bad shot. It kind of lingers in the mind, although i know better. Is there a mental technique for this?

Thanks Glen, another helpful video. Cheers Joe
