Controlling Your Low Point for Perfect Contact

There are 2 main aspects to playing great golf:
– there’s the athletic side: your ability to generate speed and power
– and then there’s the skill side: your ability to control the club face, club path, and low point of your swing

And one of the reasons golf is so difficult is that you need to be able to hit a wide variety of shots… full swing, bunker shots, short game shots.

Each of these requires a different swing, and this means your hands need to be versatile. You have to be able to control the club face, your low point, and the timing of your release to deliver the proper impact conditions for each situation.

And so in today’s lesson I’m going to share a great drill that will help you build this skill.

I call this drill “Landing the Plane.”

To do this drill, place an alignment rod on the ground.

Start with some 1/2 swings. Your goal is to make contact with the alignment rod right at the bottom of your swing.

To do this properly you need to pay attention to your wrist conditions.

On a full shot, your lead wrist turns down into a slightly flexed or bowed position. I call this “knuckles down” and it helps to square the club face and deloft the club for maximum compression.

On many short game shots, you want the opposite… your lead wrist extends a bit to add loft and help the ball get up in the air.

Practicing your low point like this will help you gain more control over your spin, your contact, and your ball flight.
