If you want to hit long drives & pure irons you need to get your hips moving. I have been saying this since 1991. The problem is most average golfers started as adults. Adults will try to hit the ball sitting in front of them solely with their arms. In doing so, you never get faster hips because the hips don’t turn. They simply end up just facing the ball when they hit the ball.
To get faster hips you need to be doing constant drills so you get used to the feeling. The more you repeat the movement, the better you get at it, the faster your hips. As the hips get faster you will start to hit long drives & pure irons.
So many people don’t work on their swings enough to ever get this. This is why I want you doing this drill at home, at the range and even when you play. Just get addicted to it. The more you do it the faster your hips will start moving which result in long drives and pure irons because you will start to look like a pro as you swing. The more you look like a pro the more you hit it like a pro.

Paul what can I do with 2 replaced knees an being a little heavy!? About to quit the game I love!
Boom
While I agree with the concept here, faster hips doesn’t necessarily help all golfers. I tried doing this in my swing, but then I started hitting duck hooks and snap hooks. Faster hips results in bad timing
Nice leg action, Paul. Something tells me you cut a rug pretty well.
What happens if you combine some elements of the Moe Norman swing to your swing?
Hi Paul! On vacation at beginning of April this year I had some golf instruction that helped me begin to remove my arms from my swing and develop the beginning of an effortless swing. Your videos have been an enormous help in re-enforcing a swing driven from the legs and hips. Thank-you for all the great guidance! Recently I have started to pause at the top of my backswing (even seen some professionals doing this…) in order to get my legs/hips to fire first and drive my swing. When successful I feel my shoulders/arms/club lagging my lower body. This is a great feeling for me!
Thx, your video clips really helped me with my golf games
Thanks Paul!
Would it be ok if I opened my stance a bit at address, for an easier, complete hip turn on my follow through?
I think one of the main problems is when people try to do the right thing they miss hit the ball and then give up….. that is definitely where the power is coming from…..thanks Paul
Excellent drill. Just shoot the knee through the gap, "just PRIOR to change of direction" and you're 90% there. Keep the arms quiet and some trail side lateral bend still needed to not bury the club into the ground, but this drill forces you to open the hips. Getting the arms around the trail hip may take a little getting used to, but the lag is very nice when done right.
I think Matt Wolff must have been following you?
Hey Paul! Do you ever find students will get their hands/arms "stuck behind" when thinking about firing hips first? I had tried your method when I first started golfing about a year ago, and then went and got lessons and the instructor told me I was firing my hips too fast and too early and my arms were getting stuck behind. I did have some success with him, but recently came back to your method and now it works a lot better. I guess my coordination / sequencing skills have just improved. Just curious on your opinion about what the instructor told me.
Why do you need to have the hips open at impact?
Firing the hips and arm stay stuck behind…doesn t work for every one !
Paul Wilson has about the best golf instruction for amateurs and seniors in my opinion and I've tried lots. His program has hundreds of videos, all set out in a non technical and position feel orientated way, easily achievable and logically leading from one to the next.
Great lesson, thank you Paul!
Such great, easy to understand advice! Thank you!
Fantastic tip. ..i see when you swing to hit an actual ball you tilt more and drop your trail shoulder more..do these moves just happen because of lack of tension in the upper body and hip rotation?
How timely this video is for me, Paul. I just had a driver lesson. My “homework” is starting my turn much earlier than I had been. Basically as soon as I start coming down. I have been waiting too long to start the turn. Therefore, my hip rotation wasn’t very good. I also found that the more tired I get, the less hip rotation I have. Therefore, this causes me to chicken wing because there really isn’t enough room for my arms if I don’t have my hips turned. It was a real eye-opener. Now I have this phone drill I can do inside my house since it’s in the 90s and hot here. Thanks!
If in the backswing you use the weight of the clubhead to set the top of the backswing, won't your body automatically turn with the weight of the club in the downswing through the ball and release to the finish? From some of your previous videos, you seemed to stress letting the weight of the club pull your body through the swing. Do you need a conscious effort to turn your hips for more speed?.
You hit the nail right on the head Paul. Hip rotation is what it's all about in the golf swing. Thanks for explaining it.
Hi
I have arthritis is my lead knee which kind of makes it harder to turn on the downswing. Any thoughts to help me get out of the way would be appreciated. 😊😊
