Wow I would have guessed number 2. It activates the bounce of the club and makes it easier to get a consistent hit. But chipping happens to be the best part of my game. I was afraid you were going to tell me I was doing it wrong. Lol.
Out of all the searching I have done, of all the top UK pros on YT, this is the best explanation. Most (except Finchy) fail to reference rotation, including Piers who has had issues himself, because us duffers see-saw the shoulders resulting in the development of the chipping yips. All these short game videos feature chipping from short grass but that doesn't help you when dealing with rough which is where I usually have to chip from. The club gets tangled in the grass and the blade gets closed. Enough of chipping from perfect lies. Show me how to chip from 4-5 inches of rough.
Dear Chris , thank you for the instruction. My problem is that I decelerate on the downswing and end up topping the ball . Any fixes .
Fantastic no nonsense tutorial Chris, you even replicated all my mishits perfectly. Why do the Americans fill their videos with all talk and little instruction. Chris are you releasing your hands every so slightly at impact and or the follow through? I know you don't break wrist on the way back but just curious about the follow through. Thanks mate

I implemented everything you said in this video and I had a blinder today. My handicap is 17 and I hit 37 points and I got my first eagle 🦅 from applying these tips you have given in this video.

You didn’t mention the pro’s get spin coz they use expensive soft balls,
The most difficult part for me is the timing of the pivot. In fact rythm and timing is everything in Golf. If you don't have good rythm you will never hit the ball good. Anyway high-quality video's Chris!
Im going to simplify chipping and pitching for everyone!! Don't hit down on it and dont pick the ball off the ground simply SWEEP the ball. This will get rid of all your chipping yips and will give you great contact. Chipping and pitching is more mental than anything so your swing thought should be sweep the ball and watch how good you get at it. I do NOT recommend bouncing the club into the ball, that is a mistake that you "might" get away with but most of the time you will not! Here's a bonus sweep the ball when you're in a greenside bunker to!!!

Just to share my experience and also for discussion, I have been trying various chipping techniques the past few years. Many are advocating the technique here but I find it has a big weakness as the leading edge will be the first to reach the ball or the grass if u r in the fluffier grass, contact is still inconsistent. I still believe it is best to play what they call a little draw swing to hit down but with shallow angle of attack, playing with very slight open face with just a little shaft lean so that the bounce still does its job but enables the clubface to reach the ball first for clean contact and better control. I think this is what Pete Cowen is advocating from the various short (n often not too elaborate) videos of him explaining the chip shot. If u are very versatile perhaps u can use different techniques in different situations but I feel this is the most versatile technique where u can use a lower lofted wedge to hit a roll out shot or use a sand or lob wedge to hit a spinny one that checks.

Hi Chris, what a fantastic video! This is exactly my issue. Except the fact that I have had this for a number of years now and have developed an uncontrollable nervousness around chipping and pitching in general. Whether you would call this the yips or it is just as a result of bad technique im not sure but any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Can you do a video about chipping from very crappy lies. Depression surrounded by grass. Ball behind tuft of grass. Bare lie. Etc.
Severe uphill lie or downhill lie.
Everything is over complicated with you guys. If I went for a lesson and all this was spouted at me, Id want my money back. It doesn't have to be complicated and dragged out like you and so many others do. It's a game of golf, hand eye coordination, timing, rhythm, and then just play as much as possible.
