people tend to with chip shots, especially kind of higher handicaps or infrequent, golfers, even people who are, you know, perhaps 15 handicap, 12 handicap, they struggle because they don’t understand that you have to play chip shots differently.

Do you struggle around the greens? Does that seem a little bit like, okay. Yeah. I, I feel like I sort of decelerate or flip into it. Do you find that you just hit too many Duff shots when really you shouldn’t be?

We don’t want it to be digging in with the leading edge causing chunk chip shots. If you are too far away from the ball, the heel digs in and sort of turns it over. Not only does it dig it in this way, so it digs it in this way and you get that sort of runny sort of chip shot s around the green and you don’t quite know why.

What we’re gonna try and do is cut the grass under the ball. That’s all we’re trying to do. Just bounce that club and cut the grass. That’s our only sort of task when it comes to chipping. Yes, we want the distance control, but as far as contact, that’s all we want.

So we’re gonna raise that shaft up. We’re gonna stand a little bit closer to it and then comes the technique of feeling like, well, there’s the mindset feel like we’re brushing the grass.

But how do we get a repeatable chipping technique? We want to try and maintain this triangle that we have it set up on the back swing and on the through swing. We want it to be as reliable as possible.

Jason Day did this, but all the best chippers in the world, keep it really simple. So you’ve got that foundation and that’s why this drill is perfect. There we go. Grab a towel, put it under your armpits. What that’s gonna do is create unison between my chest, okay? My core and my upper body with no manipulation. it’s smooth, it’s fluid, but we are turning and rotating the core in this manner. And the towel just sort of enhances that feel. Practice this chipping drill at home, that movement even with, or without balls.

And you can practice with different clubs, different type of shots, but get the foundation, right?

The best part of this, it works on every department of the short game as well, shots out of the rough shots on the fringe bunker play that sort of connected feel. So you really can practice this and utilize it everywhere.

We just need that foundation. You just need that simplicity.

Follow those very simple tips for chipping. And you have got the foundation set to be a very good short game player. Thanks for watching. I’ll see you. Next time.

0 out 10. I constantly take 4 shots to get up and down even though I'm OK practising at the range. I'll be practising these tips. Thanks.

  4. Yes. I struggle around the greens. Which kills my scores. I donā€™t hit a lot of greens but Iā€™m close. So almost every hole is a chip or bunker shot. Iā€™d say 50% are ok. Others lead to double triples and worse. I score about 90 or worse, and think I should be low 80s. I work on chipping every day at home. I work on your techniques. Thank you very much. I will get better.

  5. Do your wrists break a little?

  6. Jay Schwarz says:

I would like to see you talk about how to hit those little baby chips. I find the 10-20' chips are the most challenging to control. Easy to skull across the green.

  7. Dom Pierro says:

Playing for 25 years shot in the 70,s in my day and I have been duffing for years since. This short game towel technique plus the other knowledge is priceless thanks

When I chip well I use the triangle and donā€™t use any forward press.

  13. Erik says:

Chipped is the absolute worst part of my game. My good friends say I decelerate on impact. I think this drill might help. It's also very mental at this time as well.

totally correct in your statements, I am reflected

  15. K C says:

Hitting chip shots fat is my real bug bear, think I'm all hands and arms, hopefully this may help. Should you feel like you're rotating on the way back too?

  16. Personally this is good for the majority of golfers who donā€™t practice their short game. But if you like to practice Iā€™d say practice feel and many different shots. Allow for a bigger swing. I would give my self about a 7. Itā€™s also a lot more fun. I also take a lot of pride in my short game., literally why Iā€™m ussually about a 6 handicap. But definitely a good advice.

    Be connected! Love that.

  18. Best Music says:

from a hacker to an attacker….I went from baby short swings trying to clip the ball to a full swing with tempo…and now it all comes together…even taking real divots for a change. took a little trust …but now so much more fun and like real golf!

  19. roger king says:

I rate my chipping at 9.5. Everything Alex says I agree with. Sill working on my full shots.

  20. any observations on chipping rhythm – i heard 2 to 1 is best for putting (ie twice as slow back as forward).

He is the god of golf teacher.
I watched his lesson and am so amazing that I can improve immediately.
Tofday, my handicap was nine. WITHOUT HIS LESSON, my best score may stay around twtenty.

I am so suprised how he can teach so easy. Everyone could have theimmediate results!!
    He is so great teacher!!!

  23. Ed Moreno says:

Chipping and putting is the best part of my game. It is more about feel than technique. Alex, your instruction is dead on. I use to use my 58 degree almost all the time. Now I prefer to use my 54 degre. My home course is in the Mountains so alot of uphill and down hill lies. I like the brushing the grass and getting through it, almost feels like you are cheating. My struggle is getting off the tee consistently. Great lesson!

  24. Julie Rader says:

    Excellent info!!!

  25. Steve ash says:

Hi Alex, good instruction. I adopted the role of 12 in my chipping to choose me club, and it has taken the guess work out of club selection. My mates now envy my short game.

  26. Turning through & up to avoid duffing was an ā€œahaā€ moment for me. Do you pretty much keep the ball in middle of your stance for most situations? How about if you have to get over something like a bunker, water, or hill?

  27. I got a chipper club problem solved.

  28. Chuck Martin says:

I hit a lot of bladed chips because I am afraid of chunking the chip. It's like I am afraid of hitting the ground for some reason. Have a Merry Christmas!

  29. I donā€™t ever chip with my legs that wide

  30. Jay Adams says:

I like that towel drill. Iā€™ve been using my daughters volleyball, but I think Iā€™ll give this a try. Thank you for the great content šŸ‘šŸ»

  31. Dave M says:

It should be mentioned with this technique, it's OK to brush the grass a little before the ball and the result will still be fine. It helps that I don't have to try and make perfect ball ground contact.

  32. S T says:

Thanks for the great lessons! Have a great holiday!
