How to stop topping your golf shots, specifically your woods. If you have found yourself topping your fairway woods and hybrids this golf lesson by Danny Maude is getting rave reviews from golfers around the world.

Whether it’s your 3 wood 5 wood or hybrid the solution to stop topping the ball is the same. You need more space through the impact area. Learn Dannys 3 step process that will help your stop topping any shot including your irons and your driver but Danny in this video Danny puts particular emphasis on your fairway woods and hybrids.

Players like Tiger Woods, Rory Mcilroy, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson are wonderful hybrid and fairway wood players and no matter your age or ability you can copy simple things that they do to eliminate the top shot for good.

Learn this and more in this weeks golf lesson, plus as a massive thank you for supporting my channel I’d like to give you two bonus videos that will help you to generate more distance and accuracy off the tee too.

Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!

I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.

On YouTube and my personal website ( I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.

Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble

I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

where do you print out the guide?

    2. So I've been topping my fairway woods a lot lately. There is nothing more frustrating. I watched this video three times with a visit to the range in between. Today I played and hit three very solid 3-woods. I found the key was finding the bottom of my swing and opening up towards the target.. Thank you for the great lesson.

You honestly are the best coach here in YouTube. I have only been playing golf for 6 weeks! Just 30 mins ago, I was hitting consistent bombs at 300+ yards. All because of the tips from your videos. Thank you!

    6. Dave Martin says:

Thank you Danny. I need to practice this.

    7. Leipuanani says:

Thank you for another great video, Danny! I'm playing better and enjoying it more than ever!

    8. Thank you, I enjoy your method of breaking down the swing. Especially when shown in slow motion as it solidified everything your teaching.

Great sound advice and instruction…easily relatable to body swing mechanics without getting bogged down in technical detail

Danny – talking about skiing and golf in relation to each other
Me – can't afford to go skiing because golf has me on the breadline 😃

This is a game changer for me.Used this method on the course today and it worked so well with my 3,5 and 7 woods. Can't wait to hit my new Uw club next week using the same principle. keep up the great work Danny, its really appreciated.

    15. john ortega says:

A million thanks, I went back as a refresher to all of your videos and I now understand the “why” in my bad shots from all my clubs.thank you, I love this game too much to give it up, even at age 64.

    16. Great mention about taking a practice swiing

    17. Great instruction on hitting my 3 wood off the fairway

    18. Joe Troupe says:

Great lesson on Fairway woods, Danny.

    19. Stephen Barr says:

Love the idea of the ball not being the target

    20. This is great information Danny, I have been having an awful time topping my 3 wood….which is usually my go to club thankx

    21. Saidi says:

Relax your hands on your grip as well, when you tense your hands on a back swing in anticipation it raises the club up a cm or two. This has been a massive problem for me.

    22. When I started watching your video, I thought of the tip of laying a tee 2 inches is front of your ball and then transferring your weight to the front foot and swishing the grass, hitting the ball and tee and then extend my arms straight and low toward the target. Later in your video, you mentioned the same tips. You are my favorite golf instructor.

    23. David Evans says:

As an avid skier, I liked your analogy of skiing, Danny. Thanks.

    24. dazzler114 says:

Very good Danny! I do enjoy your teaching.

    25. Great! Danny thats going to help me a treat

    26. J G says:

      Absolute legend!

    27. Danny, I am 5 months playing golf now and find myself getting very confused between iron striking and fairway wood striking. I particularly find the "slow motion" component of this particular video so I can repeat look at all the aspects of setup, swing and finish. BUT I would also find useful a side-by-side slow motion view of iron and fairway wood setup, strike and finish so I can begin to understand and then feel the subtle differences between these. thanks !!

    28. col walker says:

Danny, this is great vid(esp the skiing analogy). But… there's an abundance of videos on the net re topping woods but not duffing! Even when you search for duffing fairways you still get these 'topping' videos. So there's an opportunity for you to steal a march! Please do a vid on duffing fairway woods. Eg I still do this even when on its on a tee! And I have watched your 'crush your fairway woods' vid(drag & lag) and I still struggle. Thanks Danny

    29. I'm a senior and have always hit my #3-5 hybrids well, and so switched to Touredge HL4 hybrid iron-wood set. I have found that I revert to hitting these like irons, (hitting down). When I remember to start with ball in the middle of my stance and hit like my hybrids and fairways, I make better contact. Any thoughts on these new clubs, like the Touredge HL's and Cleveland Launchers?
Great video and I will concentrate on this now. Thanks!

    30. Tim Barden says:

been going back through a few of your vids….this is brilliant cheers

    31. Edward Brown says:

Great video Danny..i have tried this and it works very well thanks!

    32. Derek Sharp says:

Just watched this after another of your videos promoting hitting down on the golf ball with a fairway wood and how tricky it is to consistently glide through the grass to hit the ball. Anyway I had had limited success in trying to glide through the turf, its just so difficult to do that accurately every time, so will try hitting down . I seem to do that with irons more easily as the weight of the clubhead seems to encourage that, but the head of a fairway wood seems to light so I don't get the same feel. Is that a problem you recognise?

    33. Amr Elhenawy says:

Absolutely delighted to have found your channel. Your fantastic approach addressing those fun things of swing, balance and freeing up the arms. In addition to Wrist motion, getting the club to do the work while you sway on the course 😂and enjoying the elements.

Best golf instructions in years for me at least!!🤷🏻‍♂️

Helping me get back into the game, enjoy it and avoiding frustration and pain!
      Many thanks

    34. Great tips. After a miserable round on Monday where I gave up on fairway woods and hybrids, tried these tips on the range yesterday, and out on the course today, just concentrating on the flow and the gliding the surface. Much better contact than Monday, and a lot of really good shots. Thanks!

    35. Brian Givens says:

Works great I've struggled with this for years. I tried your drill it was fantastic.

    36. LE GEND says:

Step 2 is a golden tip. Getting a feel for the club, where the bottom point is and how it’s interacting with the turf is extremely important. Mostly because we hardly ever have a perfectly flat lie. Once you get a feel of that motion you’ll be able to make those tiny adjustments to accommodate your lie. Well done

    37. A Johnson says:

Hope that is going to help me. I was off two yrs because of illness, then snow, then COVID.. so now with all the restrictions in place, I can’t hit a fairway wood to save my soul. I waste at least eight strikes a round. I’ll let you know. 😩😷

    38. Will implement the looking toward the target instead of focusing on the ball Thanks as always solid advice 👍👍

    39. Pj Mendoza says:

Great detail of explanation .Thank you👌

    40. The video can be more appreciated if the subtitles do not block so much of the screen display.

    41. James McKeen says:

Love your videos Danny. One question. At the top of the backswing, you always do something (drop the club, move your front leg) to initiate the downswing. Some people say to "bump your hip". Why don't you just start the swing? What is it exactly that you do at the top? And why do you do it? Would be a great video is you described the swing initiation.

    42. Tom Kerrigan says:

Would you set up for a hybrid just off your front foot like a driver?

    43. Rob Adoo says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This video has really helped me with my woods. Played today and didn't top a single shot with my woods. And seemed to add a few extra yards aswell. Cheers 👍🏌

    44. I can’t wait to try this drill, and apply to my game. He’s got me striping my driver, but now I’m topping 3fw…
