Multiple things can simultaneously be true.
1) Fulmer took UT to heights Majors would not have experienced. Look at the 1990 team (9-2-2) as an example.
2) Fulmer stunk at hiring assistants. His best guys were holdovers from Majors (the phenomenal Mike Barry: OL 98-01 excepted).
3) Fulmer needed to be fired.
4) The problem wasn't Fulmer's firing, it was the subsequent hires. We could have had Gary Patterson (not offered an interview) or Brian Kelly (wore an orange tie to his interview). Schiano Sunday was justified.
5) Fulmer sunk UT twice, and was paid handsomely both times. He is hubris personified.

Remember, Currie was in LA to interview Mike Leach when he was called back to Knoxville to be fired. Schiano was going to be pushed onto Currie by boosters/administration until VolNation went completely bonkers and stopped that. But Currie was gonna hire Leach, if he had control over the choice

Another thing about the scholarships, it won't hurt nearly as bad as it used to. NIL means that some players, even good ones, could get NIL instead to cover tuition or whatever. Could be wrong but I don't see it as a problem at all
