He's shocked that it's got 14" wheels, and yet it only has 14's because it's a GSL-SE, the vast majority of 1st gen Rx-7's actually rode on 13" wheels.
From a time where a Mazda was a Mazda. And kind of good. Very nice car. Only thing I would change…..the engine 😉

I remember the cars my family had going back to the early 1970s and they all had passenger side mirrors. I don't recall any cars that didn't.
I can't discriminate against any rx7. They are all so beautifully designed. I'd sell my entire soul for one at this point, with absolutely no preference on model or condition.

I actually had an '84 SE with power steering, plus it had a 'drive-by-wire' throttle! I once took out the passenger seat and was able to fit a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (ripped lengthwise) in the car. It was fun to drive, those wide tires provided a lot of traction. That car had 3 catalytic converters.
Wait what? You can twist the sunroof until it released while driving… I remember when the front latches on my sunroof let go on the highway. Covered in glass, then copped for speeding. What a day!

really tiny car in person , not comfy for a large person , most of them are crashed or modified heavily, very tail happy car especially with more power, can be made to be pretty awesome but i dont really like them stock. the infini model was the best of these in series3

With how short and low the car is, that is not high, especially compared to modern cars and combined with your giant height.
Originally it was an SA22C, the FB didn't exist until they facelifted it for the American market which didnt have the room for that chassis code.

A big turbo and porting go a long way on these.
My second car was a 79 and my third car was an 85. Both the carbureted 5 speed versions. The 79 backfired like a mofo and had a more raw feeling. The 85 was far smoother and nicer inside. They never ran quite right but were reliable enough for my high school days. I was in the orchestra and jazz club and would drive my upright bass around town in them, along with an amp and still had room to spare. Super squirrelly on the road though, rear wheel drive with 13 inch tires could have gotten me in a loooot of trouble a few times but I got lucky. Fishtailing on highway 17 in front of a semi was probably my scariest moment. Also pulled a 180 in Los Altos hills which could have gone way worse. Fun.
I bought an '82 back in '86 and absolutely loved it! Had an epic 360 degree spin out in really heavy rain on the freeway when some jackass cut me off – thumbs up from other drivers when I came to a stop facing the right direction to just keep going. Not sure it would have ended so well in a less balanced car, but also the light weight of it may have contributed…😅

This review brought back many memories of one of the most favorite cars I have ever owned. My 1985 GSL-SE was painted Charcoal Gray, which I think is the same as this car, especially when the video had better lighting. Mine was not leather, but otherwise the same with the all red interior and cassette player with an equalizer. Definitely a nice setup back then. The one thing Doug forgot to mention that really was the difference in the GSL-SE over the other versions was the engine size. The GSL-SE had the 13B engine which continued in the next generations. I test drove both the 13B version and the 12A. The horsepower and feel of the 13B over the 12A was pretty huge. I kept the car for 25 years. There were a couple years of not driving it, but when I did, it was a whole lot of fun and without any of the ABS and computer controlled handling of a modern sports car.
Reviewing a forty year old car as if it was brand new. Some people take care of their belongings. Some belongings are not cared about and junk. Prime example of a not only an awesome car but a car care giver.

My folks owned an Rx-4 station wagon. My older brother had a girlfriend with this car. I was already a rotary engine fan! I was not impressed by any part of the driving this car. That is pretty bad despite I was driving air cooled VW's back in 1984.

The original car came out in 1978, surprised you didn't mention that. But yeah anyway this car was super cool during it's day and a blast to drive. I haven't seen one on the road in decades.

I've always liked the Series 1 RX 7, and it looks especially good in this spec. I've never seen one of these in black before, and with that red leather interior too it looks fantastic. A friend of mines Mum had one of these back in the late eighties. A 1982 model in red, and it had the Elford turbo conversion, which pretty much doubled the horsepower. It was a properly quick car for its day

To my eyes this is a very elegant little car. Size as well as shape.
