The KEY to Lower Scores | Guess your way to Success

Today, we are guessing the distance we hit each shot. You only get 1 shot on the course so it is important to get the distance correct.

I use the Swing Caddie SC300 to read the distance.
You can find it here:

I believe that it's crucially important to think about carry versus distance. I spent years and years thinking my 7 iron is a 155 yard club. That might be true on a fairway but it's not really accurate when trying to hit an elevated green. The far better judge of distance is the lowly 145-yard Carry of my 7-iron. Once I got my ego over the implied loss of yardage and focused only on carry (for all target shots), I started to drop strokes.

  2. My older Swing Caddie 200SC has been very reliable. I also look at the variance of several balls to figure out which clubs have the most dispersion and consistency. (And where i need the most work) I keep my “number” for each club on a luggage tag on my bag which helps me think out a shot when pulling a club. Older Swing Caddies don’t have voice, but take less room in my bag, and can be had cheap. They have a random practice mode which is fun. Batteries last. Sturdy. Do have to line it up, and don’t use range balls. Helpful for all levels of golfer if you don’t have a flight monitor in your house 🙂 Thanks for a great demo of a dialed in swing too. I’m impressed. 👍🏽

MSH is not a particularly 'short hitter'–at least compared to me. I tried this exercise a couple of times, and discovered I could play just as well with 7-8 clubs in my bag; too many of the clubs went close to the same yardage. Given the distances I recorded, 8* loft difference between my clubs gave me more predictable results. I think this would be true of most slower swing-speed short-hitters. As a result, I walk more of my rounds with a 7-club set in a Ping Moonlite sunday bag.

I always enjoy your videos and I am amazed at how consistent your swing is! I would be embarrassed to replicate this walk through my bag but it is sure something I should do. Thanks again for your excellent content!

  5. Tom Govern says:

Great! We are fortunate to have a few local ranges in the area with set ups like trackman and top tracer. Knowing the carry yardages is really key.

  6. This is so important. But I don't think I could string 12 decent shots in a row. How does this launch monitor compare to actual? Very informative and we should all know what our normal shots carry and run out to. Thanks

I own the voice caddie and was using it when first purchased . I enjoy using it more for pitch shots with 8 iron through 58 degree . Much easier to confirm accuracy. On a side note . Maybe I missed it but what were your final gains using the speedsticks .

  8. Len S says:

Wow you hit that HYWOOD great

  9. Len S says:

Wow, I’m 61 and we have basically the same numbers. Nice to see that I can improve to have a handicap as low as yours someday

  10. Paul C says:

Love the videos ! Newer subscriber. Do you find the Hywood too upright? Just got one and love it but at 5”7 seems to upright to me… gonna play it again tmrw. Ty again. Enjoy your enthusiasm ⛳️❤️

  11. Jeff Badke says:

Just curious…if you don't think you have much of a gap between the 6i and 5 Hybrid, why have both in the bag?

  12. Great video, it was a breath of fresh air and as well, great ball striking! Keep up,the great work.

  13. I recently discovered your video series. My game mirrors your club yardages. It’s a treat to watch your golf swing. Great rhythm and balance. I will try to copy your swing.

  14. Klehocky1 says:

I think that one of the strengths of your game is your short irons and you has those distances guessed spot on.

  15. Dougie Reid says:

Great video MSH. The hywood seems to be your most consistent club. Did the 5 hybrid go further than the 4 because you are getting more height and hit it out of the middle? What iron flex are you playing? I think I swing slower than you but my P wedge goes 120 consitently (46.5 degrees) with regular flex.

  16. 5:15 "I've got not explanation for that except that I hit it really good." I'll say! 😁

  17. Gil Garza says:

You smash those woods/hybrids. Nice high ball flight.

  18. Mr Kipling says:

Really good video. Different, I like it.

  19. Willie T says:

Love the walk thru the bag w/the VC300. Makes me think I need to do the same. Great video…

  20. Shake & Bake says:

I could watch yardage videos all day. Great video as always. 😃

  21. James Werner says:

MSH, a while ago I "calibrated" a wedge and 9-iron distances using a range finder and taking 30 shots. For my 9-iron, I found that my low value average value is 116 yards, my high average value is 127 yards and the middle is 121 yards. This has helped tremendously since I can take the position of my ball, factor in variables (wind, green elevation, etc) and feel very confident in executing the required shot. I know the "gap" values between the two and extrapolated for the rest of my clubs.

  22. Craig Seaver says:

clean turf interaction. Distances off the turf mat at the range will not be the same out on course.

  23. aviatorAW says:

Nice. I saw a video where Lee Westwood takes a permanent marker and writes the distance on the back of each club. I have marked a few of my shorter irons and found it helps.

  24. It's obvious that you know your game very well. It would be very embarrassing for me to try this (although very helpful). Thanks. "Hit'em straight MSH "

  25. I am at such an early stage of my golfing journey that videos like this show how much refinement there is to the sport. Its exciting to know that the journey is a long and winding one
