I have a unique problem. I hit my irons off the mats way better than off of grass, especially if the grass isn't great. For example, I carry a 5 iron off a mat around 220 yards, but on the course off of grass, I'm around 200 yards. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!

You could always buy a 7 iron that’s lofted the same as a 5 iron. Boom just added 20 yards.

What golf course is that? Looks like Scotland

Staying down with more shaft lean is the key. I started doing this a couple of weeks ago and it still takes a few practice shots to get the feeling. Ive used a similar "no backswing" drill but starting at impact position with hands forward and shaft lean. I have a ball in front of the face to push it as far as I can to add interest….and keeping me in the down position longer..

Looks like it will make you get floppy.

  6. quite pleasant demeanor…clearly spoken and paced explanation and very useful exercise…thanks mate!

Seems to me Eric’s rendition to this drill is different. Step one is the same. However aren’t you supposed to totally stop halfway back in step two for a couple of beats? Than proceed in your downswing. You stop for a millisecond but than go up again slightly before your downswing. What you’re doing is considered step three in Eric’s video. In another video from Eric, he advocates no weight shift back but staying centered and rotating back. This way you don’t have as far to move to get to your lead side. Thus it’s easier to hit ball first and than turf. Your thoughts?

Where do you position the ball, middle, back, or forward?

  9. It's ironic that golf instructors don't know that "further" means "more times".

I tried stage 1 and found it very difficult to do. Will take it to practice this evening and see if it all works out

Thanks Andy. This is a drill I need to work on to reduce mishits at the ball with my irons. I will try it ASAP.
