Toyota GR Corolla vs VW Golf R Comparison

Here are two of the hottest hatches on sale today, the Volkswagen Golf R and the Toyota GR Corolla.

Both drive all four wheels, have five doors, six manual gears, and at least 300 horsepower. But the similarities end there. The GR Corolla is rally-inspired and puts performance above all else, while the Golf R is a more premium, track-tuned compact. Both approaches are fun, but which is better?

VW golf r for sure and it's easier to obtain, Toyota is stupid for intentionally making less and causing dealer markups. eventually if they want to make money they will make more. if not people will buy other brands

  2. A.J. Cap says:

The golf is way better looking inside and out. Plus GTI/Rs hold their value better

I like my Focus RS better than both of them. However of those two, I’d take a GR. I’m just not a fan of VW’s styling.

  5. Marlon Baird says:

The Toyota will be a collector's,besides everyone has a golf and its way too common and will never be as realible

  6. I marvel at some of the absurd comments on here. You can drive the cartoonish Corolla, a car that Pee Wee Herman would drive, or drive a refined, sophisticated, engaging (yes, they are) Golf R that will still look modern and timeless 20 years into the future. For all of you talking about resale values, used Golf R’s have held their values very well, with five year old Golfs sometimes selling for nearly their new price. And for reliability, I see more Toyotas abandoned on the side of the road than VWs. Fact is, if you take care of your car, a VW will last every bit as long as the Toyota. A young woman side-swiped us a couple years ago, and we ended up driving a Toyota 4-Runner as a rental. What a gas-guzzling pile of junk. I wouldn’t own a Toyota if someone paid me to. Nope, we love VWs, which are driver’s cars, loads of fun, and economical to boot.

GR Corolla, self limited production caused high markups on Core units. Strictly the base unit if we are discussing price gap – no limited slip, no JBL, no heated/cooled seats, no function air ducks for front clip/hood, no armrest and the interior leaves a lot to be desired. Again, find one at the base price of 36k and you got me – its the ABSOLUTE buy. Circuit vs R – no contest, R takes it easily.

I just want to point a few things out:

The GRC always gets points for it’s adjustable differential split but people fail to mention that 70-30 doesn’t put 70% to the rear, it allows 70% to go to the rear. In real world driving, you cannot kick the rear out at all on dry pavement. Like what so ever. This is not true of the golf.

My next point piggybacks off the above; the golf’s “trick” differential doesn’t allow more power to go to the rear, only 50% can just like always. What it does is allow ALL of that 50% to go to ONE wheel. This is what induces oversteer. And it does it very well.

I understand fair comparison as well but it’s worth noting that the golf wasn’t developed with a 6sp at the forefront. It’s only available in the US market. The DSG is much faster in every measure and certainly does not make the GRC the same in acceleration. A DSG 8R is like a full second faster in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Even more than a second in some instances.

Lastly, it’s not always fair to say the GRC is “much” cheaper than the golf because you NEED dual LSD’s from the performance pack and such on the core to make it even remotely desirable. This pushes the MSRP in the 40+ range and then you’re like within 5k.

All in all I’m super happy the GRC exists. Same for the CTR and EN. They’re all great cars for sure but this golf is certainly the most well rounded. It has WAY more features than the others, it’s more luxurious in every aspect, it’s faster in a straight line, and on the same tires, it’s just as fast around tracks as even the CTR. I mean even on it’s abysmal oem tires it was only a few seconds slower on the ring. Just saying.

7K cheaper but no one talks about the markups in the U.S.

  10. Jordan says:

A hot hatch is not supposed to be "sophisticated" and "adult". It is supposed to be childish and fun. Throw in the 7K price difference, and Toyotas reliability and for me it is a no brainer to take the GR.

  11. Cross says:

first of all no one wants a Volkswagen unless they were giving it away for free. it may be fun to drive but man the infotainment is ass in that car and to be honest if u want something fast and fun, u want it to look the part. even nice colorful paints arent even a thing for Volkswagen. not to mention i trust Toyota way more than Volkswagen. id ur looking for something thats fast and fun with the looks and sound. get a hyundai N car. if u want something fun but also grown up u got plenty of American muscle or even electric to choose from. like there is no place for the golf R.

  12. Illya Church says:

Corolla all the way, more reliable and fun, better tuning potential, the only downside is it doesn't have armrl rest

  13. Illya Church says:

Golf looks like a boring fish. Front grill looks worse than new Z

  14. Bill Shoe says:

Great job on this comparison! Sadly, greedy Stealerships ruined the GR Corolla

  15. Hitchens says:

Golf R is better in every conceivable measure.

  16. Denis Vogel says:

The video provided a lot of useful information but a track comparison without laptimes makes no sense at all unless you're from the same woke school of thought who think giving students grades is anti-progressive. Petrolheads know darn well that there is much more to a car than its time around a track but nonetheless it would be good to know the time instead of giving us the usual crap conclusion about how everyone is a winner.

  17. Phill M156 says:

I would definitely buy a Golf R…..if wasn’t for the stupid haptic controls!

  18. Steve says:

Let’s be honest the vw is trash!

  19. What a stupid question that is.

  20. Mark Ling says:

Lower price than R? Find me a GR Corolla that doesn’t cost arm and leg for over sticker price😂

  21. Depends what you want
Responsible and refined, get the VW
Fun and engaging, get the Corolla
