Chelsea & Tony Northrup review the Sony a6700, a 26 megapixel APS-C mirrorless camera with 15 frames per second and 4k video at up to 120 frames per second. They compare it to its predecessor, the Sony a6600, and Canon’s closest competitor, the Canon R7.
Together they test the three best mirrorless APS-C cameras for sensor stabilization, portrait photography, wildlife photography, sports photography, low-light video image quality (how much noise is there at high ISO?) to find the best camera for you.

I bought 4 second hand sony E lenses for 1000€
Thanks. About stabilization, I get your point of evaluating a % below the reciprical rule. However, it would have been interresting to to the same without stabilisation at all. And when you'll evaluate the XS20, please try youy best to check that with close experimental settings.
Why is no one including the X-T5/X-H2(s) in their APS-C comparisons with the A6700 ? Please tell me, aren't they the current pinacle for APS-C ?
My a6700 should arrive Aug 15. Can't wait. It is mostly for the ai auto focus that I wanted to upgrade. That should cut out missed focus most of the time. Second for me is better low light performance due to the BSI. I will appreciate the new adjustment wheel in front of the shutter button.
For me the "fully articulating" LCD screen is a downgrade. I only ever use the tilt feature and that has been impacted by the new design. I can understand vloggers who want to see the screen facing forward. I just don't do that. Fortunately this is overall a low use feature for me. I'll live with it. I have a Panasonic bridge FZ1000 with the fully articulating screen so I'm not new to the game.
I sold my 6400. The 6600 now becomes the back-up camera.
The review I was after was against A7IV for wildlife with 200-600mm
Important to remember that that choosing full frame over APS-C also means lenses are much larger, heavier and more expensive. For those who want to travel light, think less about the bodies and more about the glass.
You said that for low light the 6700 is better. Most wildlife photography is shot in low light (think golden hour or forests/jungle). More pixels on the same size sensor equals more noise.
I have an A7IV and am thinking about the 6700 for a second camera to limit changing the lens.
canon is terrible. compare with Sony. need training.
Japanese companies listen their customers.
Canon R7! just bought one, thanks for your share. What kind of filter will be better? Kase or Nisi?
@TonyAndChelsea : or A Photography Enthusiast and New Camera Buyer point of view detailed comparison between Fuji XS20 and Sony 6700 or Canon R7 would be appreciable.
Why am i bombarded with ads when I pay for premium, I refuse to purchase anything that anyone is hawking within a video. Please understand this!!!!!
I think this time Sony is behind, the R7 is better in many different ways, now the R7 and a6700 have the same price.
As a Canon 90D shooter, would love to see how well some of the Canon ef-s lenses perform on the R7 (with an adapter of course). The 90D has a lot of focus issues, attributed to the sensor size and MP. Had been wondering if the mirrorless APS-C Canon would have a similar issue, but seems not – that's good to know.
You missed the best kind on the block: Fuji X-S20.
Not to sound mean, but from someone looking to put money down riggt now, this is a bit of a useless comparison without the X-S20 here… if it's bc you don't have a copy, vwait until you do? Leaving a camera out of the comparison that wins many categories is a bad look.
Many reports of AF issues in the R7 and R10…
I have an M50 which I love but seriously considering the A6700
Ok the lens dealio I'll figure that out, my next question, FLASH compatibility? I have a 580ex2 that appears from what I've read will work easily with the R7, what options are there for the Sony??
My opinion is that Canon are shooting themselves in the foot by blocking 3rd party lenses without even offering a broader native spectrum.
You guys are fast!
please do a comparison to the XS-20
Question: Does the Sony a6700 have a Dedicated AF button on the back for "Back Button Focus"?
Thanks for the review Tony, I think you have missed a few things, I have a A6600 and it's and all round camera for me, landscape, astro and wildlife, occasional portraits and ocourse video. It would have been good if you added in that this camera is an all-rounder and included sensor performance for low light in stills, also improvements and performance in low light, and stabilisation for video with a long lens. I have invested in Sony and third party lenses so it's an easy choice for me, I'll upgrade to the A6700 when I get a good deal.
How is the EVF blackout and lag – is there any improvement there, presumably it is still barely usable for tracking fast action ? It's hard to believe Sony still haven't produced a stacked-sensor version or at least been able to match the Canon non-stacked sensor readout speeds.
Hi Tony and Chelsea
I always had a canon DSLR throughout my life as an amateur. And i had used other 3rd party lenses too. Now im going to switc over to mirrorless. Was thinking of getting a canon R7 but as you mentioned in this vdo that Canon somehow is going to restrict using 3rd party lenses and canon lenses are really expensive. So what would suggest me to buy.. please help and advice
Thanks
Mason
Is Sony running out of ideas? Neither the A7RV nor this A6700 was something i would call innovative. Just standard and mediocre stuff with too much Sony PR hype from YouTubers.
Tony mentions that the a6600 does not have a flip screen and he could not see himself when doing a selfie. That A6600 actually does have a screen that can be flipped to face forward. Just grab the screen from the bottom, pull it toward you and then swivel it up. It is now positioned (mostly) above the camera and facing forward.
