That’s a great idea! Even if it’s a small neck pillow in a pouch, you could put 1 day of clothes and pjs in case you have a checked bag that doesn’t arrive in time. That’s happened to me, but luckily, I landed back home and didn’t need anything, but had to drive back to the airport the next day to claim my bag.
The machines will definitly see through it, and this is definitly a great travel hack. Bring a pillowcase, preferably one like that with a zipper, not your bedroom pillowcase. Stuff it with clothing and you save space and have more comfort

The x rays do indeed show what's in there. If you just have legal stuff that's fine. I would not put laptops or your liquids in there because they have to be removed from the carry on. Through security they do not check how many items you would have, that varies per airline…
Yes, you might be having 3 carry on baggages but, at the gate, they cannot x-ray it. If you only put soft clothes in it then hey will not check it, because it feels like a pillow. Yes you are technically breaking the rules but what is the difference between a pillow with standard filling and a pillow filled with clothes? Idk. Because you could have used old ripped up t-shirt strips as filling. Legal. But is it legal if that shirt is stillf fully intact? Wel yes and no because yes you are bringing the same amount of items but no, because you are bringing the same items. It's not illegal items anyways.

One time, many years ago, there was this girl with a big pillow sitting next to me in the plane and she told me that her pillow is stuffed with her clothes, I was so amazed that it worked. Tomorrow I will be flying to Portugal and I hope it works with the pillow case for me as well 🙏🏽
