my first iron upgrade i just made was from old 90s style muscle back iron set to some forgiving and long callaway x2 hot irons from like 2014 second hand.. i think they were a good choice but they definately havent magically taught me how to hit an iron like a pro..
Yeah for real. Burner 3.0 have done me well for a decade, now I’m 7 handicap. Getting some new to me mizuno irons finally.
Surprisingly hard to find this answer on youtube. Would you say its at least worth upgrading from cheap starter set cavity irons to more premium brand cavity irons once you've gotten your swing down consistently?
I wish it is as easy to improve as implied in the video… at least the improvement didn't happen for me. Plus coaching isn't exactly cheap in my location (Singapore). But kudos for highlighting the fact that it's all marketing, and the fact that the club performances are pretty much bounded by the rules.

Had Rsi1 for 7 years . Great clubs!! Face slots fell out still performed well until last weekend when head snapped off my 8 iron!! Shaft was totally rusted !
Just bought mavrik irons and WOW massive difference in distances .. mental lofts!…kept rsi PW in bag as a gap wedge!!
Except for producing a different sound, I reckon say an old Maltby CER 851 (just the cheapest head I could think of that I've tried) would be as forgiving as anything on the market. If anything, the biggest innovation is the hollow design simply because it allows a forgiving and good looking iron to be made.
Very true. Everything in my bag is off a used shelf. Currently a 7 handicap. I did the math and retail, my bag would go for about 3500. I did the math of what i actually paid and it was about 1300, Most of the stuff is anywhere from 5 to 15 year old tech. Case in point my Mizuno's went for about 1200, I paid 400. M1 driver with a Graphite Design shaft was 950 retail. I paid 350, 150 for the head and 200 for the shaft. Same story for rest of bag. Just need to find a shop that sells used hardware and a decent fitter. Most pro shops will steer you to new clubs any chance they get.
started last summer and I am rocking yhe wilson d100 irons from 2013 and I am very happy with them.
I tend to agree with you because for the passed year and a half I have been using a semi-blade irons (upon the recommendation of a "pro") and it doesn't showed any improvement in my game, worst I feel my game degraded that I have to go back to my old irons and my game started to improve again hopefully I can go back to where I left it about two years ago. I used to use a Ping Rapture V1 sets it's a good thing I haven't sold it
Well, you talk about cavity back irons… but blades or "players' CB" are the same: haven't change much and why should they (then again, the price should also remain constant). I mean they change TOO much. Looking at a replacement for my set or irons, and new is too expensive… too strong lofted, often too offset and the toplines have grown as well… However, good second hand players' CB or blades or combo with x100 or PX 6.5 are usually battered around the sweet spot, possibly even more than my own set! When they're not, they're dear!
I'm a + handicap and I simply love these videos. I have a buddy that is about a 7 and every year he get the new game cavity back irons. I tell him every year save YOUR MONEY! He could watch this video get all the info, and still blow his money…

i don't agree with your main contention in this video. they're not just making a club longer and delofting it and turning your old 6 iron into a new 7 iron – they are absolutely tweaking things under the hood like the the CG location and in the example of taylormade, tweaking their speedfoam design. your new 7 iron goes longer with more ball speed and vertical launch, therefore retaining the 7 iron flight at a 6 iron distance.
I’m thinking about going back to Burner woods and Mizuno mx irons. What I used 10 years ago when I was playing quite well.

My irons standard off the shelf, mizuno jpx 800's that I got second hand…😄 they do all I need them to do really, I play off 11 after getting back into golf in lockdown times…
I''m thinking about getting fit for some irons and looking at shaft options to put into my current irons over buying new…my swing is my limiting factor I feel at the moment over the irons.

I got a set of graphite shafted M6 irons on clearance for cheaper than guys were tryin to sell em 2nd hand so I figure I got a decent deal. I got em for $900 dollaridoos (down under mate) and they were being sold 2nd for a grand or more 🤷♂️😂🙂

i still have my G2 pings They have never failed me no need for new ones, I have a even older set of blades and they work just fine also, I don't need to put on a show with whats in my bag my skill is on the course

Really good advise, i've referred my new golfing mates to your channel for this kind of advise. Recently had a hit of some old taylormade burner cavity irons and couldn't believe how easy they were to hit and the height was ridiculous! No doubt they would keep up with the sim2 irons of this year
what about learning to play with blades – ive heard you say that once … an old set of blades should be easy to find and hone some skill with those

I have a 2008 set of TM RAC HT 3-SW that I hit really well, I play off 16. I did try a set of G425s on a launch monitor and there was zero difference in distance, and I actually thought the Pings were slightly more difficult to hit out of the middle.
I'm going to spend £80 regripping my RAC's, it's made me appreciate them more watching this video!

I thought exactly that, so I wenet to my golfshop on my local golf course and tried out A LOT of cavity backs. Newer and older ones. And the one that was by far the best for me after months (yes, months!) of testing, was the new T300 model, which bothered me a lot since I did this primarily to prove to myself that there is no difference. So well, I ended up with those
Well said and very timely. Bought my Ladies Cobra Baffler Blades (cavity backs, not perimeter weighted) as used clubs in 1990, and am returning to the game after a 20 year break. Today, there is more choice for seniors (ladies and gents) with slower swing speeds! I have a group of 33+/- degree used irons (from eBay) with shafts ranging from a UST Mamiya recoil ES 760/ F2 (senior flex) to a DST Xxio MP900 41 g (L flex) to a Fujikura Orochi 50 g LL flex. Most (but not all) are perimeter weighted. I am going to have a lot of fun "testing" these clubs on the range. Last time I chose "pretty". This time it will be "performance", and a pretty bag.
Been playing with Rsi1 irons for a good few years now but with graphite shafts. In my sixties and a 14 handicap I love them.
love this commentary! that's way I still play my 80's ping eye 2's😁 or my 70's custom made blades🤣, maybe I should consider swapping to graphite shafts🤔.
also, I tee off with my ping eye 2 3wood(real wood), cuz I hit it the best. leaves me with an iron shot to the green. on par 5s I double up on the 3wood or a 2 iron(when possible) with a soft wedge to the green, then a freking 2 putt, damm it🙄
I kinda agree in most circumstances. However most people I know and myself included if they’re buying new irons we’re going to keep them for 5-10 years. Though as far as fitting is concerned I only push people into getting fit for a shaft flex. As that’s really the motor that drives the ball
Hey mate, I disagree on certain grounds, and I know this is a niche example coming from myself, and there are others out there with somewhat similar examples, however I just purchased some cobra f max irons earlier in the year, after having some very uncomfortable “home brand” golf clubs for the last 13 years which I got given to me when I was 14, after getting more serious with golf during the whole COVID period, I decided I’d like to replace them with something not so much amazing, but just help me enjoy myself, after testing some clubs out, I just found these Cobras felt easy for me, I’ve got an elbow issue so I can’t swing super fast. But I can play without worry now because of these light clubs, maybe in another 15 years I’ll replace them, but it won’t be for innovation that’s for sure,
I heard that Taylor made had a problem with the faces cracking at the ends of the slots.

I agree with you that there is not much difference in cavity back irons. I would also venture to say that there is even less difference in forged irons – how much can you change in a piece of iron. Is there really any difference in any iron over the years other than loft changes, club length, cosmetics? What is the benefit of switching to less forgiving forged irons? Most pros these days are not playing forged blades. Does your scoring improve because of switching irons, or better ball striking?
Eh.. agree in the sense that you should always buy cavity backs used (as they’re significantly cheaper like you said), but I wouldn’t say that all club brands just “re-badge” their cavity backs. Completely agree that Taylormade and Callaway do (they’re essentially marketing brands at this point) however Cobra, for instance, has made drastic improvements with their cavity backs since the F6 (at least shape and technology wise). But overall, a very useful viewpoint to consider👍🏼
I have a set of Bob Toski cavity back irons. Must be 20 yrs old now. Just started playing again after a long break from the game. Would there be any advantage to me updating to a more modern cavity back iron set or would the difference be minimal? I often feel I may be at a disadvantage using irons that old considering progression in technology.
