It's really sad that Rod Carew wasn't included in this. He had the hitting IQ of Tony Gwynn. He used the same, Charlie Lau, hitting philosophy as George Brett.

Hey guys, so a 27 year old MLB rookie isn't uncommon, as most players that make it to the Show make it there around 25-26 years old, with the most elite prospects (Bryce Harper, Juan Soto) making huge leaps into the majors around 19
the fact that joey votto is on this list and not pete rose is criminal even tho cheater bonds and brett are on it
The Mariners signed Ichiro from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), Japan's major leagues. Japanese players usually have to play in NPB for a certain amount of time before they can come to MLB. There is currently a fairly complicated transfer system in place that stipulates how long the player has to stay and to ensure that the team the player is leaving is fairly compensated. And yes, we usually the "rookie" year is the first year in MLB. Ichiro actually has more hits combined between NPB and MLB than Pete Rose did in MLB.
Bonds played his first few years in Pittsburgh.

There's a process in place by which mlb teams gain the rights to try to pay for the rights to draft a player from japan. The payment goes to japan. Then Ichiro was drafted and then signed under contract becoming a rookie.

It's unfortunate that Bonds used steroids, which certainly jacked up his home run totals (year and career). I've read that Bonds not only knew how he would be pitched (what kind of pitch and in what order), but he could also accurately predict how a teammate would be pitched. My favorite player of all time is Ichiro. There's no doubt in my mind that he, and not Pete Rose, would be the all-time hits leader if Ichiro has come into MLB at 22 rather than 27,
And yes I do believe there is a some footage of someone catching a home run in the canoe out in right. I know it’s happened and I’ve seen it and I’m 99% sure it’s here’s probably a vid on YT showing it
Tony Gwynn is definitely top 5 maybe even top 3 best hitters of all time. Top 5 is always debatable but Tony Gwynn not only put in the work he had the technique and didn’t try to do to much just dealt with what he was thrown

First off I wish to mention that you lads are both brilliant and I love when you stop and comment in the video. Hearing your insights are great! The part where you talked about the batter breaking his bat on a HR, there used to be a player named Jim Rice for the Red Sox. In the 80s he broke his bat on a check swing!

Theres been so many great hitters, but ive never considered anyone to be better than Gwynne. Hes basically a hitting scientist.
And Maddux was known to be the Gwynne of pitching. Those duels were as good as you'd ever get from a standpoint of guys who really took the "student of the game" moniker to an entirely different level.
This actually understated Ichiro's Homerun ability, he could turn it on even during games, he had afew Grand Slams in his career, and Barry Bonds even said that Ichiro would dominate the Home Run Derby if he entered..

Couple crazy stats for both Maddux and Gwynn. Excited for a Maddux vid even as a diehard Phillies fan lol.
Maddux: faced 20,421 batters in his career. Only 310 saw a 3-0 count. 177 of those were in intentional walks.
Gwynn: 10,242 plate appearances in his career. Only 434 strikeouts and 790 walks. He put the ball in play in 9,018 of his 10,242 career plate appearances. Just unreal.
Tony Gwynn could play golf with his bat.
The 80s are known for the low home run count.. 40 home runs would get you the title and most years nobody got to 40. It was a different baseball era. Gwynn shouldn't be compared to today's hitters by that stat. I mean hitting 394… good god man. Compare that to the averages of players in this years All Star Game.
When I lived in the SF Bay Area, we'd go see Bonds play and some of the people out in the water waiting for his HR balls would bring dogs who would literally jump in the water to go after the balls lol. He was a joy to watch, however controversial his history was.
Barry Bonds was the best hitter & the most fierce hitter I ever seen. I don’t think we ever going to see another player dominate the MLB like he did. A pitchers worst nightmare. He got walk so many times. Even with the bases loaded he got walk. 😅
There was an agreement between the mlb and NPB that japanese players had to play 6 years in Japan before coming to mlb if he had been in the mlb for those six years he would undoubtedly be the hit king, also Barry bonds played for the Pittsburgh pirates before going to the giants.
Joey Votto played something like 15 seasons before ever hitting a pop up out to a 1st basemen.
All those Bonds splash HRs were at San Francisco, not Pittsburgh. It's currently called Oracle park. Before that it was called AT&T park, and before that Pac Bell park.
Ichiro was insanely fast. I don't know what this guy is talking about. And he Completely left Edgar Martinez off the list who has a better Average and on base percentage than Votto. There were no smarter hitters than Gwynn and Martinez in the 90s. And Martinez was the Greatest Designated hitter of all time. I am sick of him getting overlooked.
Bonds' homerun off the broken bat isn't even his craziest homerun. I once saw him hit a homerun early in a season — which I think was either his 73 home run season or the season after that — which looked normal until they showed the replay and he actually hit it off the choke of the bat like an inch above his hand. I couldn't believe it because usually when you hit the ball there it hurts your hands painfully because of the vibration and the ball goes nowhere. Of course we know now about his steroid usage but back then being a kid I just thought how amazing that homerun was and I still remember it to this day.
He was such a dangerous hitter that the reason his On Base Percentage was that high was because pitchers would intentionally walk him, sometimes even when bases were loaded.
The fact that Maddux never struck out Gwynn in 107 at-bats is shocking to me.
