48 Replies to “LIV Golf vs. USGA: Was Phil Right?”

  1. Barry says:

Any LIV player can "qualify" locally as can any other player for both US Open and The Open.

  2. I just saw the field announced and Gooch is in. So looks like Mike Wahn changed his mind.

  3. Gary Davis says:

Qualification rules should NEVER be changed until after the tournament is held. If the USGA wanted to change the rules for qualification, those new rules should be announced before the upcoming tournament, but only changed after the last putt falls in the upcoming tournament. Absolute dick move. And WHY guys went to LIV is none of anybody’s business. If it was for the money, or for the number of tournaments, or the shotgun start, or to play three rounds, or to wear shorts, or to listen to music on the course: it doesn’t matter. It’s nobody’s business.

  4. travis says:

actions have consequences, and they all knew what could happen if they went to the Saudi Exhibition Tour! Deal with it!

  5. Jake Sells says:

Is this a re-run? I feel like I just watched this one.

  6. The USGA has the prerogative to set the standards for entry into their tournaments. Gooch at one point qualified for the TOUR Championship but made the "business decision" to quit the TOUR. As a result he was no longer eligible for the TOUR Championship and as a result lost his exemption into the US Open. Yes the USGA changed one word. That was to react to a situation that was unforeseen.
LIV at every step has formed an exclusive tour. One that you MUST sign a contract and play every event. No outside play is allowed on LIV. Yet LIV players want to be free to "cherry pick" other tour's events. The PGAT merely enforced already existing rules that allowed for up to 3 releases. To play LIV it would require 14 releases this season. LIV wants into OWGR. OWGR requires a majority of events to be 72 holes with a cut. They require a system to qualify. They require local qualifying. They require tour membership to be based on performance. All of this was BEFORE LIV and LIV has none of those requirements. They are in court against the PGAT. They have lost every hearing. LIV lost against the DP tour. They will probably lose against the OWGR should the sue. The players who joined LIV quit their respective tours. They got paid. Why do they feel entitled to go back to their old job on a part time basis?

  7. Merle V says:

Let me guess Tony, you are also a Democrate

  8. chris wolfe says:

I find it odd the requirements changed and it only affects one guy.

  9. You guys bitterness to LIV runs deep, never mind water bottle promos, you guys are doing some job promoting the Tour Cool-aid!

  10. Wasn’t it LIV who wanted to cooperate before they launched? Who was divisive?

  11. Joe Cook says:

I have not been a fan of the USGA for a long time. I have spoken to several people who were members of clubs where the US OPEN was being played. They had set their courses set up like the USGA asked them too then the USGA came in and made it a mess shortly before the actual tournament. They also said the USGA guys were jerks on top of everything else. This whole roll the ball back is asinine

  12. David Beyea says:

The real dick move is becoming a PR man for a terrorist state that murders and dismembers journalists because you have gambling debts.

  13. NIGEMMM says:

What a load of BS OGWR is biased, all pro golfers playing in a tournament should get points based on the field Enough of the USPGA being a typical American corporate bully Yes the golf channel is boring Yes the PGA is boring Hence why LIV is now a thing because it’s needed and created by the apathy in the current tours

  14. Athol Hill says:

Sorry, LIV hasn't been divisive. The PGA has been divisive. LIV was happy to co-exist and have players play PGA. PGA didn't like that.

  15. Phil is a dick. He’s had us fooled for 25 years.

  16. Not Satoshi says:

Aim Point ball marker —> Amazon. $10.

  17. mpkelley20 says:

Phil has been right about everything related to the PGAT. Anyone who can’t see that is delusional. As for the USGA and their change here, I like to think they had no pressure from Jay on this decision but I feel like he is such an asshole that I think he did.

Liv actions have not been divisive. The PGAT decisions and actions have been divisive. Liv wanted to coexist and work together. But PGAT spit in their face so Liv ramped up and now are a real threat to the tour. And if people don’t believe that, then explain why the PGAT has made all these changes to stop the bleeding of talent leaving.

I love all golf. Even watched women’s college golf last night. But Jay and company that think the PGAT should be the only big tour are creating the drama here.

Golf needs to change. Even your company helped change the way people view golf. It’s time to accept that Liv is making the changes needed to bring golf into the next century. No longer is is a rich white man’s sport.

  18. Phil has been proven right again as usual. Finished 2nd at the Masters recently and made all the haters look like idiots, he even made Rory McIlroy have a mental breakdown and pullout of a 2nd PGAT designated event. Talor Gooch is arguably the hottest player in golf right now with 2 back to back wins against very strong fields, so not having him in the US Open undermines the whole point of a major which is to have the best players in golf playing in the field. This US Open will have an asterix next to it in the history books.

  19. Golf Ball Quality is something that is good to know for the reasons that you mentioned. BUT, after how many shots does it take to make one of the layers bad? Meaning, does it take 100 shots to make a ball go out of round or cause a layer to flatten? How often should you change a ball during a round or should you just stop using a ball after 1 or 2 or 3 rounds if you are lucky enough to not lose the ball. It looks like the Pros go through multiple balls in a single round.

  20. Not Satoshi says:

If Toney or Chris were offered $20 million to go work for a Saudi golf magazine, then they are both taking the job. I really like and respect both you guys outside of LIV talks but the hatred you have, especially Tony, is 🤮. Tony doesn’t even watch golf so it’s hard to understand his strong position. Majors should have the best players in the world, regardless of background or league, period.

  21. just my opinion, but i don't think Tony has a leg to stand on in this Gooch argument. Sure, the rules are changed all the time. I really don't know how often, i'm not that deep in the weeds on it. But i can say i don't recall any rule-change scenarioes BEFORE that "unqualified" a guy from a tournament. I can imagine if it had happened pre-LIV it probably would have been thought about twice.

But let's not kid ourselves, this rule was absolutely changed because of LIV. It "feels" worse than pro golfers joining another tour, primarily because that $hit has been going on with the European and Asian tours forever. Those guys ARE feeder tours for the US "big show". Heck, if you want to get down to it at the micro level, how many times have pro golfers said they'd be at a tournament here in the US, only to drop out for dubious reasons (thereby costing promoters $ in ticket and concessions sales).

I know in this Gooch instance it's the USGA, but i'm satisfied there's something going on there similar to the PGAT – and that something is that there's a boatload of $ being made by some folks that aren't tour players that are threatened by LIV. And that irks me, because i thought these guys were "non-profits" or somesuch.

  22. La Muralla says:

Phil is right. Always been right… and time has given him the reason. If youre a PGA fanboy you may not like his opinion… but its the truth.

  23. Mel Abshier says:

LIV players aren't missed. The Liv tour is nothing but a series of exhibitions for the Crown Prince. The players that went there did it for the money. They knew the consequences. They said they wanted less travel, less tournaments, and to be home with their families. No sooner do they play on the LIV tour and they want to come back and cherry pick the top paying PGA & DP World Tour events. Keep your money, enjoy your life, and quit whining.

  24. LIV is not getting up every day being divisive. They have been rejected out of all leading governing bodies at every turn, often these rejections are without merit. Their players have legitimate grievances for being denied access to Major tournaments. I think Mike Whan is a very sharp guy and a great leader. Likely Mike is being presured by PGA Tour which is a commercial organization trying to use all it's influence to maintain a monopoly. Because of their monopoly they have been successful. Your claims of they are "divisive at every turn." is aligning with the PGA's narrative. The US Open is not a PGA governed event, and it is not a business; it is the governing body for golf in the US. The USGA should not be folding to the PGAs pressure. Further, why do you think people who join LIV should not be allowed to participate in open tournaments.

  25. ed f says:

Phil has always been an ass and always will be. Hope his kids enjoy inheriting his blood money.

  26. You guys are delusional if you think LIV is more divisive than the PGA. Every chance the PGA gets they try to shit on LIV. If both parties were given the option to partner up who would say no? LIV has tried to work with the PGA every step of the way and got rejected. Than the PGA goes and copies LIV after a few big players leave. Special events, larger purses, smaller fields are just a couple examples.

  27. WRENCH 222 says:

Hey grey t shirt dude, why don’t you kiss the usga’s ass some more! Grow a pair girl! You think this rule was changed for anyone but Gooch??? LIV Rocks and the USga’s and the pga are nothing but a bunch of bitch pussies! ….and they know Gooch will beat their asses!!!

  28. Soooo who is the OWGR?
Lets get that fact public knowledge.
Whan was being a jerk. He changed the rule to keep 1 person out of tournament. Another rule that does nothing to grow the game.
    Call it what it is!

  29. Chevy BelAir says:

What comes out of Phils mouth isn't automatically wrong. People that play for LIV aren't automatically wrong. I will never watch or be involved with any PGA event until they end the child like temper tantrum behavior. There is no logical reason why players should be banned from participating in either league. You can say anything you want to say but in the end it is all about of controlling the player and the money. It is the same problem golf has had since the inception of golf. "You will play for me or you won't play." I thought we were passed that but evidently some still have something to learn.

  30. David Oliver says:

I think Phil has been right on much of what he has said about the PGA tour proven by, among other things, the way the tour has brought out the money for it's players and changed it's schedule. I think the USGA made a bad decision that would target one guy and make that decision past the deadline for him to be able to go through qualifying. I hope he qualifies by his play at the PGA and I hope a LIV golfer wins all the other majors this year. It would be fun to see Brandel Chamblee and others deal with that.

  31. clw22580 says:

I took the Ping golf ball online fitter and there was less than 1 td diff until 30 mph winds between by number 1 ball left dot and my current Maxfli tour and even then it was 3 yards on an iron so unless you are pga level it largely doesn’t mattter

  32. clw22580 says:

The more the pga usga etc act the more LIV golf looks attractive to me

  33. Mat Lev says:

the VANS MTE shoes are great. l use them all the time.

  34. Joe Mack says:

Pro golfers are free agents until they exercise their free agency. Of course Phil is right.

  35. E. says:

Phil was right. He’s a rich bastard like the rest but he was right. PGA sucks and has for awhile.

  36. The USGA establishes their criteria for their upcoming Open every year in February. This move was no different, and was not "retroactive" as so many have incorrectly claimed. The qualifying criteria for the 2023 US Open had not yet been established (again, they do that in February preceding the June Open). They establish their criteria annually, based on the current environment.

In the past, in the pre-LIV environment, there was no need to add "…and be eligible for…" to their Tour Championship-based criterion. But LIV changed that, by creating a Tour with extremely limited (48-man) fields, with no cuts at all, with every player being paid to play, with no qualifying, and with every event being just 54 holes. LIV changed the men's professional golf landscape, and not for the better in the USGA's eyes, so it was perfectly reasonable to establish current criteria for the upcoming Open that included "qualify for and be eligible for" the prior season's Tour Championship.

I'll note that that language has also been adopted by ANGC for their Masters tournaments. Where's the hate on ANGC for doing that?

When the landscape changes, you change with it or you get left behind.

  37. Robert Kyhn says:

I can and do live without LIV. I think all of the "I did it for my family" stories are total BS. I feel this WFL move will die a quick and quiet death. Pro Sports are not democratic and as entertainment, shouldn't be managed by those principles. Basically, golf isn't great without the rules and it is the responsibility of golfs institutions and players to follow the rules. New rules golf is a marketing gimmick trying to get a new demographic interested in the game. I love golf because of its rules and traditions even with all the inherent flaws.

  38. Much of Phil's criticism of Monahan and the PGAT was correct. I've been critical of the PGAT "leadership" plenty myself over the years. But that doesn't mean LIV is a worthy competitor. They are a predator. Zero regard for ROI, unlimited funds. LIV is an abomination, IMO, in the world of golf (having nothing to do with the source of funds). Phil was mostly right, but he was dead-wrong to do what he did to try to effectuate the needed changes.

  39. Phil is right on…pga is run by dicks, hypocrites, and elitist asses…pga is the divisive …….pga does not want competition…..pga is a american tour LIV is a international league…..pga is plain corrupt….

  40. Tom says:

I'm not a fan of LIV golf because I genuinely found it really boring.
But Phil's argument is very reasonable that Gooch already qualified by meeting the critiera last year and should be in.
This is a classic case of "no take backs" on the school yard.

  41. Michael Dul says:

Phil ought to know, he's made enough of them himself off the course.

  42. CoachQ916 says:

For two data driven, logical guys….the rants on LIV have become sad. I can't believe you've allowed your bias to enter into your evaluation of things

  43. Bell Golf says:

How can someone so logical like Tony say "he left the tour and shouldn't expect to be collateral damage". Are we just all supposed to accept that the USGA is apparently a PGAT stoog?

The majors aren't ran by the PGAT. The majors should be wanting to just run the best tournament possible.

    What am I missing?

  44. videom says:

USGA should NOT be in business to be in business. the USGA IS a nonprofit organization to govern and grow the game of golf. the US Open's mission statement is to determine the best player in the world playing on an American golf course. period. they should NOT care what the players do or not do up to the tournament as long as they have the talent to prove they are the best. The USGA has lost sight of their mission with changing the 18-hole playoff to baring players because they play on the "wrong" tour. sad

  45. Every time you talk about liv, you just sound like a jealous ex

  46. Tony says:

Phil is right, as usual with his rants. It 100% was a dick move and solely done for the purpose to eliminate any LIV player from entering the tournament. This move makes it no longer an open because it will also remove any LIV player from going through the qualifiers. A full dick move all the way and they should rename the tournament, it's no longer an Open.

  47. Shawn Taylor says:

I can talk golf ball facts to some of my friends that play and they still couldn't care less. Guess that's why we usually take all my shots at scrambles 😊
