Malaska Golf // Teach the Teacher: Shoulder Turn and Transition with Billy Fitzgerald, PGA

Billy Fitzgerald is one of the best young instructors in the game. If you’re in the Chicago area, you have to look him up and visit the Beverly Country Club. Billy studied under Jim Flick for years, and he and I have been friends for quite some time. His understanding of the golf swing is top notch and it’s easy to see why he has been able to help so many golfers improve over the years.

Earlier this year, Billy came out for his annual visit. After our work on the range was finished, I changed things up on him and asked him to take a look at my swing. We took a look at my shoulder turn as I transitioned into the downswing to get the motion in sync.

Isn't allowing the arms to drop downward the same feel as starting to point the right shoulder down at the ball? Or, trying to keep the hands close to the body? Or, driving the left hip backwards? All of these things are going to produce the same motion but the question remains, which one is easier to groove unconsciously?

Watching pro iron swings down-the-line (esp. Woods, Garcia, Fleetwood) always presents me with a perceptual conundrum. I expect the hands to move out more than they do given that the shoulders are rotating around the spine on the plane they came back on. But the hands appear to drop almost vertically as the club shaft maintains that ‘4 30’ position momentarily. I think this is a key move in a successful golf swing.

Yep! Even a teacher needs a teacher! It is always good to have someone knowledgeable standing beside you and helping your swing. Why God didn't create us with 2 pairs of eye! lol

This is what I needed to see. On video I see that shoulder move is exactly what I do. I plan on working on that simple step down hands down move ASAP. Thanks 👍🏻

  12. Mike never gets behind the ball so he can’t stay there

  13. "We teach it all day long then when get ourselves on camera and we are doing the same things our students are doing." There is a simple reason for that. You and the student are both focused on the same thing.

  14. Golf Nut says:

Swing is too short because your feet are too square…open your right foot to complete your swing

  15. "hands down, club out" you have been teaching that for years

    one of your best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Where can I buy the "SWING LOOP" that I see in the background?

  18. Priceless!!! Fundamentals ARE key!!! Thank you Mike ❤️

  19. Your dear friend Jim Flick always said swing the arms and the body will follow, I watched you in that video crush several 5 irons with the greatest of ease. Just watch yourself in the vid and refresh your swing. I'd still take your worst over mine any day!!
