For a period of years, my Sigma 70-20mm f2.8 Sport was my go-to low-light lens for shooting dog show movement with the Nikon D750, Z6ii, D850 and Z7ii. I was happy to replace it with the Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 when I settled on just the Nikon Z8 and Z9. That Sigma 70-200mm lens weighs just a couple of ounces less than the Nikon Z 180-600mm f5.6-6.3. When I listened to Ricci saying that the image quality of the Z 180-600mm 5.6-6.3was "almost equal" to the Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 I put aside my intention to add the Z 100-400 to my quiver and put in the pre-order for the Z 180-600mm. I think it really comes down to "use-case". The 70-200mm f2.8 is critical to my use case as I'm often shooting movement in low-light, lousy florescent lighting areas indoors. Even my wonderful Nikon Z24-120mm f4 struggles in those conditions without jacking up the ISO at my needed 1/500th sec. shutter speed. So, for me, I love the idea of the Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6, and I may buy one down the road, but the 1 lb. penalty of the Z 180-600mm is something that historically I've been able to manage and makes more sense to fill in gaps in my current arsenal. If I really need the 100-400mm focal length, I still have my trusty Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens on the shelf. It's not the stellar lens I could have with the Nikon Z 100-400mm, but it's happy when paired with the FTZ Adapter, it's paid for and weighs 1/2 lb. less than the Z 100-400mm.
Shooting sports anything under 2.8 just does not cut it. So I have the 70-200 2.8 and 400 2.8. I also have the 24-120 and the 100-400 which I take on adventures.
The 24-120 is one of my favorite lenses, very versatile and sharp.
Love my 100-400, never disappoints. Have not used with the 1.4, but performs well with the 2x. “ 800” at 3 feet is interesting.
