The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok is finally here, but just don’t call it a Ford Ranger in a suit. That’s right, the best-selling mid-size pick-up in Australia has a new twin, having been related to the Mazda BT-50 in their respective previous generations. Since then, the BT-50 paired up with the new Isuzu D-Max, while the Ranger has moved on with the Amarok, which went it alone it its first generation.
Confused? Don’t be. The second-generation Amarok is looking to capitalise on the new Ranger’s success by taking its overall package to the next level. And yes, the two utes actually do look different inside and out – but there’s a lot more differentiation between the two than just their designs.
As CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis finds out in this expert review, the Amarok also drives differently, partly thanks to its option of a Ford Mustang-derived 2.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, with such a powertrain an unknown quantity in Australia in 2023. And let’s not forget the shared 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6. It’s a headline-grabber for a reason.

Note the claimed fuel consumption for the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine mentioned at 9:58 is actually 7.4L/100km, not 8.0L/100km. Apologies!
Hope the 10 speed auto has had it's issues sorted out.
Toyota Hilux over these two
Great vlog Byron I think the ranger is is far better value and the interior in the ranger is better quality and the VW Ute is a ranger with some cosmetic changes
Both are rubbish.
Magical video.
The 3L diesel is the old Range Rover donk. So anyone with the VW wanting to bag Land Rovers as unreliable might want to adopt a low profile
But not as much a bogan magnet as a ranger
