Lagoon & Alligator Issues on Golf Courses
Who am I: A sport psychologist, writer, and consultant to athletes, primarily golfers across the Carolinas. I will soon also be working out of Pinehurst, in addition to HHI.
Just this week I wrote an article for the HH Sun suggesting some steps that could be taken to pre-empt interaction with an alligator in a lagoon while playing golf.
How prevalent is the problem: Very infrequent, but a possibility and concern enough that players are constantly warned about it. On Fripp Island, back in 2009, a golfer searching for his ball along the edge of a lagoon, lost an arm to a 10 ft. alligator. Recent attacks on HHI in neighborhoods, not on golf courses, mostly with people walking dogs near a lagoon.
What are your precautionary steps for golf courses:
1. A local lagoon rule
2. Let the grass grow a bit longer on the banks
3. Stand as a group at the bank
Final thought: Rules or not, stay away from the lagoon, give up the ball rather than your arm or life, and make your own rules for this, if the golf courses decline to do so.
