I have a great solution for those who struggle with hitting wedges. Pros always launch the ball less than 30 degrees. To achieve this, I need to have shaft lean and lag at impact. The shaft must be leaning forward in front of the club; if not, hitting wedges is almost impossible. To measure the launch angle, I use a simple method: I walk a few paces from where I hit the ball to where I can see it fly, and compare the distance with a wall, ceiling, or alignment stick. This way, I can determine the maximum height to launch the ball.
For a surefire way to hit below that height, I use a drill where I set the wedge up about a club head width off the inside of my back foot, with the ball about one club head width inside my back foot. I flare and open my front foot, rotate through the shot and get the shaft leaning forward, making sure I have a lot of lag, and that at the bottom of the swing, the button of the club is over the top of the golf ball. If the button is below, I’ve cast the club, flipped it, and will scoop it, making me a terrible wedge player.
