Have you ever wondered what would happen if the new Golf GTI, GTD & GTI Clubsport went head-to-head in a drag race? Well if you have, wonder no more!
Mat’s on hand to find out exactly how VW’s GTI variants will compare when they hit the track. And when you look at the stats on paper, they’re relatively similar!
Starting with the engines, all three are powered by 2-litre 4-cylinder turbos (the GTI & Clubsport are petrol, while the GTD is, of course, a diesel). All three cars come equipped with launch control, and they’re all FWD!
However, when it comes to power output, that’s where a few differences come in. Starting with the GTI, it produces 245hp & 400Nm. The GTD puts down 200hp & 400Nm, while the Clubsport tops the power output leaderboard, with 300hp & 400Nm.
So will it really be a walkover for the Clubsport? Or could the GTI or GTD spring a surprise? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

The GTD is an powerful, engaging car to drive. .. it's just not "GTI quick".
I delivered a gtd a while back to a client and it gave 19.4km/l. Yes not as fast but a extremely nice car to drive

It’s not just 4K though. You’ve got to put some juice in these cars too and and in comparison to the GTD, the other two will pass anything but a petrol station.

Disappointed in the GTD – VW never really made it a proper “sport” car, but my gosh that Clubsport has some serious legs over the normal GTI.

All TDI drivers should see this. Most of them think they can outrun a 2015 Mustang GT.
Bruh… No sense comparing these, how can you talk shit on the GTD when it's literally the heaviest car and has 45hp less than the GTI, give that GTD a stage 1 at least and make it fair, I bet if you tune that GTD to 245hp it'll smoke the GTI

Driving a Golf 7 GTI Perf right now, will get a Golf 8 GTD next year. Top speed and acceleration will be not that good, but for long ranges and fuel consumption it will be an upgrade.
