How to Draw and Fade the Golf Ball | the Ball Flights Laws You NEED to Know

Good ballstriking comes down to 3 skills:
1) Can you hit the ball far enough for the courses you play?
2) Can you hit the ball solidly?
3) Can you control the curvature of your shots?

And in today’s lesson we’re going to talk about #3 – the curvature of your ball.

The first thing you need to understand is that your shot’s curvature is 100% determined by what happens at impact. The 2 main factors are the direction your club face is pointing (your club face angle), and the direction your club is traveling (your club path).

The Laws of Ball Flight are simple:
1) your ball starts in the direction your club face is pointing at impact
2) if your club path is different from your club face angle, the ball will curve away from the club path

For example, if your club face is square to your target at impact, your shot will START in the direction of your target. If you combine that with a club path that is LEFT of your target, the ball will curve to the right… if you combine it with a club path that is RIGHT of your target, the ball will curve to the left.

The greater the difference between your club path and club face angle, the more the ball will curve.

Understanding these laws of ball flight will not only help you correct slices and hooks, it will help you hit fades and draws on command.

Being able to hit fades and draws will allow you to navigate obstacles on the golf course, work the ball around dog legs, and get at otherwise tricky pin positions. It will also give you more options.

Fades travel higher and shorter, which can be great if you need to land softly or take a few yards off your shot.

Draws travel lower and tend to roll out more, which comes in handy when you need to squeeze a few extra yards out of your swing.

Zach's ad-hoc comments are the real gems here. Thanks, Zach! Oh and… P790's?

  2. So you are using the exact same swing for both the draw and fade? Not trying to come more from the inside for the draw? Not trying to change your release?

This was so great. Thank you!
